Job Description
The Utilities Pipelayer plays an essential role in the installation and maintenance of underground utility systems by supporting excavation, pipe installation, and site preparation activities. This hands-on position performs a variety of labor-intensive tasks using both hand and power tools, including tampers, air hammers, surveying equipment, mixers, and other construction instruments. Working closely with operators, pipe crews, and other skilled tradespeople, the Utilities Pipelayer helps ensure utility projects are completed safely, efficiently, and to quality standards.
A Day at Engel
  • Perform a variety of physically demanding tasks that support underground utility installation, excavation, and overall construction site operations.
  • Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and incident reporting requirements, promptly communicating concerns or hazards to project leadership and safety personnel.
  • Load, unload, transport, and position materials, equipment, and supplies to support daily project activities and crew productivity.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and secure work environment by properly storing materials, collecting tools and equipment, and eliminating potential job site hazards.
  • Assist with material handling, staging, and storage to ensure efficient workflow and project readiness.
  • Support excavation activities by helping identify and expose underground and overhead utilities before work begins, promoting safe and compliant operations.
  • Collaborate with project leadership to review trenching requirements and help ensure appropriate protective systems and safeguards are in place before excavation starts.
  • Work closely with equipment operators, pipe crews, and skilled tradespeople to support the safe and efficient installation of utility infrastructure.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to teamwork, safety, and quality workmanship while contributing to the successful completion of project objectives.
  • Perform additional duties and special assignments as needed.

What We Are Looking For
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • One to two years of relevant construction experience.
  • Ability to work with equipment, materials, and supplies. Ability to abide by proper safety guideline at all times.
  • OSHA 10, First Aid/CPR, and demonstrated knowledge of applicable safety precautions and procedures.
  • Demonstrate a strong willingness and capability to perform physically demanding work in a construction environment.
  • Follow, interpret, and convey written and verbal instructions accurately to support safe and efficient job site operations.
  • Apply basic mathematical concepts, including fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions, to perform construction-related calculations and tasks.
  • Maintain dependable attendance and consistently meet scheduling requirements to support project timelines and operational needs.
  • Exhibit reliability, accountability, and a strong work ethic in meeting job responsibilities and management expectations.
Work Requirements
  • Employment is contingent upon passing a pre-employment drug screening.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Valid Drivers License (CDL is a plus).
  • Union affiliation/willingness to join.
  • 8-12 Hour shifts, occasional weekends as needed.
  • Willingness to travel.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical labor in a construction environment, including lifting, carrying, pushing, and moving materials weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Work effectively in a variety of outdoor and field conditions, including environments that may be physically demanding or subject to changing weather conditions, as well as working near loud noises associated with construction sites.
  • Frequently sit, stand, walk, bend, reach, stretch, speak, and hear while performing daily job responsibilities.
  • Occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch, or work in positions requiring flexibility and mobility to complete assigned tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Maintain the physical stamina, strength, and endurance necessary to perform essential job functions throughout the workday.
